John O'Keefe discovered hippocampal place cells encoding spatial location.

John O'Keefe discovered hippocampal place cells in 1971 — neurons that fire when an animal occupies a specific location in its environment. This discovery founded the neuroscience of spatial navigation and earned O'Keefe a share of the 2014 Nobel Prize with the Mosers.
