Fear and Anxiety System
The fear system centers on the amygdala, which rapidly detects threats and triggers autonomic and behavioral responses. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis mediates sustained anxiety. Prefrontal cortex provides top-down regulation through fear extinction learning. PTSD reflects failure of extinction mechanisms.
