Camillo Golgi's 1873 silver staining method randomly labels a small fraction of neurons in black, revealing their complete morphology against a transparent background. Despite initially supporting the reticular theory, Golgi's technique enabled Cajal's neuron doctrine and remains essential in neuroscience.
