Galen of Pergamon proposed that animal spirits flowed through the brain's ventricles to control body and mind — a theory that dominated Western medicine for 1,500 years. Despite errors, Galen's systematic dissection work advanced understanding of cranial nerves, brain anatomy, and the distinction between sensory and motor functions.
