René Descartes' 1641 'Meditations' proposed mind-body dualism and identified the pineal gland as the seat of soul-mind interaction. While the pineal hypothesis was wrong, Descartes framed the mind-body problem that continues to drive consciousness research, philosophy of mind, and cognitive neuroscience today.
