Ancient Indian Ayurvedic texts described mental faculties (manas), consciousness (chitta), and the relationship between mind and body over 3,500 years ago. Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas linked cognitive states to bodily humors and brain function, representing one of the earliest holistic frameworks for understanding mind-brain connections that predates Western neuroscience by millennia.
