Working memory, proposed by Baddeley and Hitch, comprises a central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad. Prefrontal cortex maintains information through sustained neural firing. Capacity limits (~4 items) constrain complex cognition. Working memory is essential for reasoning, comprehension, and learning.
