The temporal lobe houses the primary auditory cortex on Heschl's gyrus, Wernicke's area for language comprehension, and the medial temporal memory system including the hippocampus and amygdala. It is essential for recognizing faces (fusiform face area), processing semantic knowledge, and encoding episodic memories. Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common form of focal epilepsy and has provided crucial insights into memory function.
