The limbic system is a network of interconnected structures including the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus, cingulate cortex, and nucleus accumbens. Papez circuit describes the flow of emotional information from hippocampus through cingulate cortex. The limbic system integrates emotion with memory, drives motivated behavior, and processes olfactory signals — the only sensory modality with direct cortical access without thalamic relay.
