Hypothalamus
Master regulator of homeostasis, hormones, and circadian rhythms.
© Blausen Medical Communications · CC-BY
The hypothalamus maintains bodily homeostasis by regulating temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, and stress responses. It controls the pituitary gland — the master endocrine organ — and generates circadian rhythms through the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The HPA axis originates here, driving cortisol release during stress. Hypothalamic dysfunction contributes to obesity, sleep disorders, and mood disturbances.
